Joan Denise Pryor Ryan - Joan was considered by our family as the quiet brightest of all. Unfortunately she was often in the shadow of Eileen who was always outgoing and ready to be in the spotlight. Joan would have benefited from a college education but my father believed that college was only for Men - Women would marry and only use their education at home so it was seen as unnecessary. I remember sharing a room at 41 Cornell Ave in Yonkers with Joan up to the time of her marriage in 1949 - I was then just 10.

Service Information Entered USNR on 3 May 1945 from 1243 Detzen Ave, Dayton Ohio. Served in Cincinnati, Bronx, Lakehurst NJ, and USNAS Pensacola Florida. Completed weather school (12 week) in Lakehurst NJ Rank Aerographer Mate 3/0 Date of Honorable Separation 12 Jul 1946.

I remember a picture of her in Navy dress with a sharp looking hat -- Joan was in the weather service and always felt that meteorology was the wave of the future - she was right and would be impressed by the modern series of weather satellites. Joan married Bill on 24 Jul 1949 in St. Denis RC Church, Yonkers NY. She loved Bill passionately and never got over his death.

Joan always provided moral support for me, always seeing things in a positive light -- she was the first modern suburban homemaker - ready to car pool kids and encourage their activities especially scouting. She loved to read and was an avid reader in her retirement - she found a condo in Florida and wanted my father to retire there with her - but dad wanted to stay up north - I think he preferred living with us because the boys were young and it was an active family around him.
