William was the eldest of the eleven sons of John T. Marshall, a farmer of Young's Mill, Franklin Twp., Hunterdon Co., New Jersey, and his wife Charity McPherson Marshall. He was probably named after his paternal grandfather.

He was the husband of Amie D. Robinson and the father of Laura E., Ervin E. (the eminent judge) and Frank Edward.

Obituary from the Trenton Times, May 19, 1904:

WILLIAM MARSHALL DIED THIS MORNING
He Was Member of Several Lodges and Well Known About the City

William F Marshall died this morning at his home, 246 Mercer Street. Mr Marshall was 76 years of age and he is widely known in Trenton because of his extensive lodge connections. He was a member of Trenton Lodge No 3 IOOF, South Trenton Encampment No 40 IOOF, Camp No 6 POS of A, Star of East Lodge No 4 Shepherds of Bethlehem, Capital City Council, Royal Arcanum. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock form his late home. Interment will be made at Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Poulson & Coleman.
