Walter Ray "Walt" Barnes, 80, Hollidaysburg, died Tuesday at Van Zandt Medical Center, Altoona, after an extended illness.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Joseph and Edna (Skipper) Barnes.

He is survived by his children: Walter Barnes Jr. of Hollidaysburg, with whom he resided; Dale Barnes of Carson Valley, Tina McCoy of Hollidaysburg, and Tracy Wyatt and husband, Don of Hollidaysburg; grandchildren: Erin, Ryan, and Rachel. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Lucas McCoy.

Walt attended Hollidaysburg High School and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. He retired as a truck driver from Altoona Pipe and Steel after 46 years of service. Walt was a member of the United Steelworkers Union.

He was known for his sense of humor and enjoyed maintaining his home, working in the yard and spending time with his grandchildren, family, and friends. He was known as "Pappy Suds" to his grandchildren.

Services held at the convenience of the family with arrangements by E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc. 2309 Broad Ave, Altoona, PA. Interment at Carson Valley Cemetery, Duncansville, PA.

Contributions to the American Cancer Society.
