On Tuesday afternoon August Cartia, a well known farmer who has long resided between what is known as the Five Corners and Harrisburg, a few miles west of Alliance, hitched up a team of horses and took a grist to the Louisville mill, leaving home in the best of health and in good spirits.

While on the road home later in the day the horses became frightened at something and ran away. Mr Cartia was thrown out of the wagon upon his head, and his neck being broken he was instantly killed. One limb was also broken.

He was about 80 years of age and was quite well known in this locality. He was the father-in-law of Jos Mullen.
