San Bernardino Pioneer Expires
EAST HIGHLANDS, April 10 -
Mrs. Julia N. Tanner Tyler, one of the pioneers of San Bernardino county, who came across the mountains, plains and deserts in Jeff Hunt's Mormon train from Salt lake City in 1851, afterward living as a girl in the old fort built in San Bernardino, died here today at the age of 83 years. She had been in ill health for a year.
Mrs. Tyler often told of life in the fort in the days when the settlers tended their crops with a hoe in one hand and a musket in the other. The Indians were won't to make raids on the settlers at all times and there were many alarms.
She was but 3 years of age on the trip across the mountains, but heard her parents tell of the hardships, of letting the wagons down the steep mountainsides with ropes, of the days and days on the desert with almost no water.
Mrs. Tyler is survived by seven children, all of them living in the valley. They are Raymond Tyler, San Bernardino; Mrs. Merriss and Mrs. L. O. Haller of East Highlands; Charles C. Tyler and Burton W. Tyler of Highland; Frank Tyler, East Highlands, and Mark Tyler of Mentone.
The pioneers will have charge of the funeral services and interment will be in the Pioneers' Cemetery in San Bernardino.
