Son of Laird Ash and Maude Campbell Hetrick, Robert married Lenore (Kate) Beck on September 30, 1947.

Robert was a U.S. Army veteran. He served during World War II with Battery A 188th Field Artrillery Battalion at Normandy, and in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a self-taught toolmaker and did an apprenticeship at Drafto in 1954. He was well known, and highly respected, in the tool trade. He retired in 1985 from Layke Tool in Blooming Valley, Crawford County, PA. He was a known story teller and loved to hunt, fish, and do woodworking.
