The son of Daniel R. & Mary Magdalena (Mickley) Heintzelman, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Franklin Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg August 7, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 16 as a private with Co. B, 138th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 23, 1865.

He married Ida Eve Myers May 3, 1878, in Newton, Kansas, and fathered Claude Arthur (b.03/30/79), Nellie Kate (b. 10/27/80 - married Henry Arthur Horchheimer), Iona Grace (b. 01/30/83), Albert Eugene (b. 12/10/84), Alta Eugenia (b. 12/10/84), George Daniel (b. 11/02/87), Margaret Molly (b. 05/07/90 - married Henry Schowalter Monroe), and Leslie (b. 04/16/93).
