Hays -- Charles J. Schukman, 87, Hays, died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at Hays Medical Center. Mr. Schukman was born Feb. 25, 1912, at rural Ellis County.

He was a longtime resident of Hays, worked at Walker Air Base during World War II, worked as a salesman for James Motor Co. and was a member of First United Methodist Church, all of Hays.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian, in 1964 and a daughter, Diana Underwood.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille of the home; two sons, Dennis of Hays and Paul of Boise, Idaho; a daughter, Joan Black of Bakersfield, Calif.; a step-son, Art Schnatterly of St. Louis; three step-daughters, Betty Dinges of Hays, Sally Lomax of Macomb, Ill., and Mary Boyer of Overland Park; a brother, Lawrence "Bud" of Long Island; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A private service will be in Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays, the Revs. John Paulin and Bill Miller officiating. Memorials may be made to the church. Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine, Hays 67601, is handling arrangements.
