He was born Oscar Marion Harrison in 1895 to parents Charity Vianna Large and William Henry "Babe" Harrison. He was the grandson of John and Emily Pope Large on his mother's side and Colonel George Washington Keene and Frances Ann Harrison on his father's side. Alternate records also record his name as Marion Oscar Harrison.

Oscar Marion preferred to go by the nickname of "Joe" for much of his life.

His siblings were: Elmer Andrew "Buster", Adrian Orecha "Ade", Augusta Inez, Laura Adelpha "Adele", Audry Lewayne,and Trudy Leo.

Oscar "Joe" married Myrtle Daniels in 1919. She was the daughter of Mary Alice and Stephen Wiley Daniels. Joe's brother, Adrian "Ade" married Myrtle's sister, Essie Mae Daniels.

The Harrison's had three children before Myrtle's death in 1930.
