Joseph and Margaret (Mather) Smith were married 2 Aug 1849 in Madison, Jefferson Co., IN. In the spring of 1854 they joined the party of Capt. John M. Bell in St. Joseph, MO, and travelled the Oregon Trail in an ox-cart with about 20 other wagons. With them were children, Letitia C. and Joseph Eddy, and Margaret's brother, John Addison Mather. Daughter Seatta Gertrude was born "on the prairie," as stated in one census record, near Devil's Gate in WY. It took 6 months to reach Oregon. Joseph and Margaret took up Donation Land Claim #3418, 320 acres just outside of Portland they named "Harmony Hill." The present day intersection of NW Thompson Rd. and NW Skyline Blvd. in Cedar Mill, OR, is within the northern section of what was the Smith property. As many other in Cedar Mill, the Smith's sold their property and bought land in Portland which they farmed until their deaths. To this union were born 8 sons and 9 daughters.
