Donald Carl Learnard, 80, of Camden and formerly of Durham, succumbed to complications from a fall and subsequent surgery at Augusta General Medical Center, Augusta, on July 25.

He was born in South Portland, on Dec. 13, 1925, to Ernest G. and Cora Bryant Learnard. His family moved to Durham when he was only 3. He attended Durham schools. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.

He met Eleanor Spier in 1947, while fighting the great fires during that year in the state of Maine. He was fighting the fires and she was carrying food in to the firefighters. They were married in Lisbon Falls on April 17, 1948. They made their home in Durham, until moving to Camden in December 2002.

Since the death of his wife in 2003, Don became the companion to Frances Brown, who died recently. During his last years, he was a resident of the Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta.

He was an active member of the Durham Volunteer Fire Department and the Eureka Grange. He was a member of the Maine State Grange and served as an installing member of the degree team. He served several terms as elected selectman of the town of Durham and assisted HUD with the establishment of the flood plains in the town. He also became involved in the organization of the civil defense network for the town and county.

During the late 1950s he identified old cemetery sites from town records and cleared those that had become overgrown to enable flags to be placed on veterans graves. He was an Androscoggin County deputy sheriff in the 1960s and 1970s. He served as part of the security when President John F. Kennedy visited Lewiston. He also was involved in the security around the Clay vs. Listen heavyweight fight held in Lewiston.

He was an avid member of the AMVETS, Post 13 of Durham. He held several offices at that post, including that of commander. He was extensively involved at the state level of AMVETS and served as state commander.

He and his wife, Eleanor, traveled to many of the national conventions during the 1960s and 1970s.

He is survived by a daughter, Sheila Dawn Carey, and her husband, Donald, of Owings Mills, Md.; a son, Gregory, and his wife, Linda, of Lincolnville; four grandsons, Jeremy Huston of Cumberland, Nicholas Learnard and Brandon Learnard of Rockland and Ryan Cox of Topsham; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his only brother, Clayton Learnard, of Monmouth.
