Helen M. Bumsted, 96, of Mapleton, Iowa, died Thursday, May 22, 2008, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services were 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, with the Rev. Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial was in Liston Township Cemetery at Danbury, Iowa.

Helen May Bumsted was born April 24, 1912, at Ticonic, Iowa, to Omer and Dora (Ham) Bueoy. She attended school in Mapleton, Iowa, Nebraska and country schools until high school graduation in May of 1931, from Mapleton High School. She helped her dad on the farm.

Helen married Gaylord Bumsted on Aug. 9, 1935, at Ida Grove, Iowa. They made their home on farms near Mapleton for four years, then moved to Danbury, where they farmed for 32 years. Upon retiring, they moved to Mapleton in 1969. Gaylord died in 2000.

Helen worked for a time at Maple Heights Nursing Home and did volunteer work at Senior Citizens. She enjoyed her flowers, hand work and reading. She enjoyed her grandchildren very much.

Helen was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ and Royal Neighbors, both of Mapleton, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Oto, Iowa, and American Foreign Legion Auxiliary in Mapleton, and was a past member of the Senior Citizens Kitchen Clatter Band.

Survivors are her three sons and their wives, Larry G. and Jean of Oto, Iowa, Jerry and Tootie of Mapleton, and Gary and Eileen of Anthon, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, Steven, Daniel, Mark and Scott Bumsted, Marcy Petersen, Jodi Kerns, Jeff Savary, Laurie Weekly, Dorey Meyer and Jodi Ehlers; David, Jeff and Jamie Bumsted and Sherrie O'Hern; 33 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rolland Bueoy of Mapleton, and Robert Bueoy of Onawa, Iowa; four sisters, Genevieve Moore of Smithland, Iowa, Marjorie Farber of Mapleton, Evonne Farber of South Sioux City, and Barbara Bumsted of Onawa.

Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren; a sister; and a brother.
