Wake services for Gunnery Sgt. Gordon J. Barnes, USMC (retired) will be 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Craddock Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Deacon John Warren officiating. Full graveside military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Fort Sill National Cemetery at Elgin.


Born Aug. 28, 1933, at Siloam Springs, Ark. to Carl Oscar and Kindness Ellen McClelland Barnes. He passed from this life on May 23, 2008, at his residence in Ardmore at the age of 74. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Ray and Mabel Hayden, and two brothers; Richard and Chet Barnes.


After the death of his parents, he was raised by his grandparents, Ray and Mabel Hayden in Balko, Beaver County. He married Judith Molloy June 17, 1972, in North Carolina. They have lived in this area the past four years, previously living in Pauls Valley.


Gordon was a true Marine. He voluntarily served four tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam and was retired. He will be inducted into the Military Memorial Museum Hall of Honors on June 23, 2008. He loved his family, his buddies of the original HMM 364 Squad, team roping, farming and fishing. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.


He is survived by his wife, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Sue Harrison Barnes, Pauls Valley; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandie and Larry Don Hull, Ardmore, Sheila and Marvin Carpenter, Ardmore, and Debie Birks, Pauls Valley; two grandsons, Gordon "Lane" Hull, Ardmore, and Aaron Barnes Gray, Pauls Valley; and a granddaughter, Angie Barnes Gray, Pauls Valley.


The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 3-5 p.m. today.
