Though he was a member of St. Paul's, William James is not buried here among family. He died in the Battle of Seven Pines/Fair Oaks Station, Va., a part of the Peninsula Campaign, along with three friends, all from Alexandria and all members of Co. H, 17th Va. Infantry, Old Dominion Rifles - privates W.H. 'Billy' Lunt, Monroe 'Rhodie' Whittington and John S. Murray.

As they were buried on the field, they are remembered on the Confederate 'Appomattox' Monument in Alexandria, as they have no other memorials.

William James' body may have been taken to the huge Confederate section of Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, Va., where there are 17,000 unknowns, most from 1862. There is no record of his burial. The book that lists those buried in this cemetery does not list Pvt. William James Higdon. I was very surprised as I have never found this in any National Cemetery. I left a note there with several ways to contact me and when they do I will complete this entry.
