As a small child the family returned to Woods County, Oklahoma near Cora where she helped raise 2 sisters and 4 brothers. She graduated from Horace Mann High School.
Miss Wagner was married to Ted Finfrock, to their marriage Theodore, Maxine, JoAnn and Norma Jean were born. Ted passed away in 1945.
On December 2, 1947 she married Elvin Ralph Bates at Medicine Lodge, Kansas. To their marriage a son, Elvin Ralph, Jr was born. Mr. Bates passed away on December 1,1986.
Following their marriage they lived northwest of Alva where they farmed and ranched. In 1971 they retired from farming/ranching and in 1975 they moved to Alva to make their home.
She was a life member of Cora Church of the Nazarene, serving as treasurer and transfered her membership to the Alva church of the Nazarene. She was the last living Gold Star mother of the Black Wing VFW Auxillary Post number 2847, and a member of several quilting clubs around Alva. She was an avid gardner and loved her grandchildren.
Mrs. Bates was preceded in death by a son Theodore E Finfrock, who was killed in the Korean War and a daughter, Norma Jean Shatswell, her parents, and sisters Freda, Virginia, Gertrude and 3 brothers Joe, George and Vernie.
Mayme is survived by 2 daughters and their husbands, JoAnn and Darrel Bryson of Oklahoma City and Maxine and Leon Murrow of Alva.And a son, Elvin Ralph (Sonny) Bates,Jr. and his wife Rae and their children Jared and Jason. 12 grandchildren, Jared and Jason Bates, Brett Coldwater, Valerie Langley, Nicole Steiger, Rick and Jerry Murrow, Fred and Curtis Johnson, Anita Kay King, Bernice (Bee) Littlejohn, Theodora (Teddie) Park-McMullin,; 14 great grand children and 8 great-great grandchildren, 2 sisters Mary Chung of Salen, Oregon, Donna Grant of Springfield, Oregonand a brother Eugene Wagner of Eugene, Oregon; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
