From Mormon history:
James Isaac Case was the youngest of ten children born to Joseph Case and Lydia Mills. He married Hannah Wiard on December 12, 1815. James farmed in Austinburg, Ashtabula County, Ohio. Their first child, Olive, b, 1820 died soon after birth. Their second child, Aaron Levi Parsons, b April 18, 1822 also died in infancy. Their next, and only surviving child, Solomon Cowles Case was born on September 13, 1825.

They joined the Mormon church and in 1846, followed them to Nauvoo, Illinois. Due to Mormon unrest in the area, the Mormons left Nauvoo. James joined Brigham Young's Vanguard Company, while Hannah remained with her son, Solomon in the Mormon "Winter Quarters". James arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in July of 1847. James' wife, son and son's wife arrived in October. James helped build the fort, roads and plant crops. They spent that first hard winter at the Fort in the area known as "Pioneer Park." They remained in the Salt Lake Valley until the spring of 1850, when they moved south to Manti, Sanpete County. After Hannah's death (from consumption in Oct 1850), James married Alice Buckley (Kershaw) Jan 13, 1851.

At age 61, James served as a missionary in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma in 1855. and "all [missionaries] suffered from lack of clothing and proper food, as the Indians among whom they labored were very poor." James was called to preside over the Creek Nation Mission, and organized a Branch of the Mormon church. "The handful of missionaries in this mission were ill, and a few died while serving in this mission. Perhaps the effects of this illness claimed Case, as he died a few years after returning from his mission."

James married Thankful Stearns (Bessey), an older widow, Jan 31, 1858. James passed away on July 2, 1860, in Manti, and is buried in the pioneer section of the Manti City Cemetery.
