Born May 16, 1917, to William W. Wood and Margaret (McNuelty) Wood at Spokane, Washington. She spent her early years in Spokane and Valleyford until her family moved to Orondo in 1928.
Ruth attended school in Wenatchee, graduating in 1934. She then moved back to Spokane taking additional classes and
then enrolled in Cheney Normal School in 1935. She returned to Orondo and attended Vetter Beauty Academy receiving her cer-tificate in 1937.
On December 10, 1937, she married Sidney Joel Perkins in Orondo, where they made their home and began to raise a family. In 1941, they moved to Leavenworth and returned to Orondo in 1943. In 1945, they developed their own orchard and home site
where she resided until her death. In 1959, Sid and Ruth initiated the family owned and operated business, Perkins Orchard Company, located in Bridgeport and still operated by their children today.
Ruth was always active in the family orchard in her youth and also with Sid after their marriage, but her true mission and love in life was working and being with children. She began teaching Sunday school at the age of 13 and remained active in church and youth programs for over 70 years. Her home was very seldom without the sound and activity of children throughout her life. Sid and Ruth had seven children of their own (plus a twin who died at birth). They adopted 2 Korean daughters, and had five or six foster children who stayed with them long-term and several more short-term. Their home was frequently the site for parties and activities for nieces and nephews, grandchildren, friends, school mates, Sunday school children, Pioneer Girls, and any child that needed a little extra encouragement and love. Her life was dedicated to God and to children.
She is survived by five sons and three daughters, Terry Perkins (Lek) and Marilyn Webb (Jim) of East Wenatchee, Ken Perkins and Jenny Parks (David) of Wenatchee, Wilbur Perkins (Linda) and Randy Perkins (Erica Bell) of Bridgeport, Julie Perkins of Kent, and Merlin Perkins of Ethiopia; three brothers and two sisters, Merle Wood (Helen) of Yakima, Lola Gange and Lucille Feil (Bob) of East Wenatchee, Ralph Wood (Alberta) of Longview, and Bill Wood (Lois) of Pateros; two sisters-in-law, Leola Sherrard of Wenatchee and Inez Davis (Wesley) of Orondo. Also, James Scott and Frank Scott (Carol) of Wenatchee; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren and numerous foster children. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, her parents, a daughter, Bonnie Haney and a son, Dennis Perkins.
Funeral services will be held at Wenatchee Free Methodist Church in Wenatchee Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. Concluding interment services will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park, and a reception at Wenatchee Free Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Wenatchee Free Methodist Church, Holt International Orphanage, or Wenatchee YMCA. Pastor Lloyd Schwanz will officiate the services.
