Mrs. Thea Johnson passed away at her Hixton home on Wednesday, July l8th, l956. Her death was caused by a stroke. She had not been in good health for some time yet was able to be about and her passing came suddenly.
Thea Caroline Amundson was 8O years, 8 months and 5 days of age when death came. She was born in North Hixton and had lived in the town and village of Hixton all her life.
She was married to Chris Johnson on July 13, 1896. Three children were born to this union. Two daughters, Miss Pauline at home, Thelma, Mrs. Stanley Laing of Kansas City, Kan., and a son Charles Otis Johnson, pharmacist at Viroqua. There are six grandhildren. Also surviving of the immediate family are two sisters, Mrs. Mary Olson, Hixton, Mrs. Minnie Thompson, BRF, and two brothers, Clarence Amundson, of Taylor and Melvin A. Amundson of Mott, N.D. A stepson, Melvin Johnson, lives at Lindsey, Mont.
Services were held at the First Presbyterian church, Hixton, saturday, July 21 at 1:00 p.m. The rev. Wayne L. Grover read the rites. An old favorite hymn "Abide With Me" was sang as a duet by Nola Blencoe and Judith Whellhan. The lovely floral pieces were cared for by Mrs. M. Yeskie, Mrs. A. C. Bills, Mrs. Earl Jones and Mrs. Sadie Jennings.
Casket bearers were family, friends, Charles Dorrance, Earl
Jones, Morris Peterson, C. 0. Pratt, Charles Sindelar and Winnie Stevens.
Interment was at Hillcrest cemetery, Sechlervillle, by the side of her husband.
Coming from Kansas City to attend the services ‘wre her daughter, Mrs. Laing, grandhildren, Mrs. Lyle Casper, Mrs. L. Bishop, Miss Violet Laing, Ray Allen Laing, Mr, and Mrs. George Laing. Others from a distance included Mr. and Mrs. George Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Peterson, Marshfield Mr. and Mrs. Morris Johnson, Baraboo; Paul Johnson, Racine; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Johnson, Mrs. Marian Olson, Osseo; Mrs. Viergictz, Colby.
Besides these from a distance the church was was filled with nearby friends and neighbors. Mrs. Johnson was a person who keenly enjoyed social meetings, but of late was rarely able to be present at such occasions. In earlier years she had been in great demand for her interior decorating work. She was a skilled paper hanger, a real artist. She was of the school - "Whatever I worth doing is worth doing well" and she followed this precept in her daily Life. Mrs. Johnson was honored by her children.
Miss Pauline was at home with her, her son Otis and family made frequent visits and Mrs. Laing has the comfort of a visit here with her mother not long before her death.
A good mother, a friendly neighbor has passed to a well earned rest. Her family has the sympathy of the community in their bereavement. Many memorials were received in her honor.
