Her son - Hans-Dietrich Genscher - was a German FDP politician who spent a total of 23 years in 9 government cabinets under Chancellors Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt and Helmut Kohl as Federal Minister and, in particular, as Foreign Minister and Vice-Chancellor for many years. After joining the FDP in 1952, the lawyer made a career there. As Foreign Minister, he campaigned for a relaxation of relations with the USSR and the Eastern bloc, for the European Community to grow together and for the reunification of Germany.
