CHATAIGNIER.--Mr. Ashford is a native of St. Landry parish,
born in 1827. He is the son of Butler J. and Sara (Barker) Ashford, the
former a native of Wilmington, N. C., the latter of South Carolina. Mrs.
Ashford's grandfather, Col. Barker, was an officer in the revolutionary war.
The subject of our sketch is one of a family of two brothers. When he was
about five years of age his father died, and his mother married the second
time. He began life teaching in the public schools. In this he was engaged
for a period of about four years, when he took charge of a stock farm and was
engaged in that business for about eight years. During this period he kept a
ferry on the Nepizcupez [sic]. Since that time he has conducted his
plantation, and taught private school. He has a plantation of over three
hundred acres, on which he raises principally rice. Mr. Ashford was married
in 1852 to Miss D. Hebert, a native of St. Landry parish, and daughter of
Joisin and Devine Fontenot. To this union have been born six children, two

"We the undersigned commisioners of said county having been duly sworn proceeded on the 11t h day of January 1848 to divide and make partition between and amonog William Ashford, Thoma s Ashford, Rebecca Ashford and Michael A. King, William King, John King, Susan King and Ann K ing children of Nathan King and Susan King his wife both desceased. Jethro Oates and Catharin e his wife and William Bass the only children of William Bass and Catharine his wife both dec eased and William Rufus Ashford and Christopher Columbus Ashford miners and only children o f Butler Ashford deceased tenants in common of the lands decended to them as heirs at law o f Street Ashford deceased.
Whereupon we have made and do hereby make the following appropriations among the respective c laimants in seveerlty that is to say the lot No 1 is assigned and appropriated to Thomas Ashf ord"....(description of lot 75 acres). No 2 is appropriated to the heirs of Nathan King and S usan his wife (78 acres) No 3 to heirs of Butler Ashford (78 acres) No 4 to William Bass an d Jethro Oates and Catharine E. his wife (76 acres) No 5 to Rebecca Ashford, (62 acres) N o 6 to William Ashford (75 acres).
