Christening document lists his birthplace as Careston, Angus Scotland. Being born on November 28, 1829 to David Low and Elizabeth Kyd.

Possibly came over in 1852 aboard the ship the Affghan at the age of 23. The obituary states he came over at the age of 21.

The Low's are part of the MacLaren Clan , John's name was "Low" without the "e" when he came to this country. He added the "e" during the Civil War. All of his original citizenship papers he wrote in his name John Low, during the civil war he Americanized it.

Enlisted in the Union Army Sept. 3,
1864 - was transferred as a private from unassigned recruits in the 144th Infantry to Company I, 43rd Regiment, 1st New York Engineers.
Oct. 1864 - Was discharged from the Union Army at Hilton Head, South Carolina. Later in the year moved with his family to Prarie du Chien, Wisconsin.

Chaplin for GAR O. D. Chapman Post, No. 80. It was organized April 25, 1883.

Married Annis Husted March 30th 1853.
