Calvin Burns McAllister was born February 5, 1842, in Adams County, Pennsylvania, the son of James & Agnes Mary Renfrew (Andrews) McAllister. In 1860, he was a laborer living in Cumberland Township, Adams County, and stood 6' 0" tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg on February 10, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 15 as a private with Co. B, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa), and was honorably discharged with his company on July 8, 1865.

By 1880, he was residing in Belle Plaine where he married Emma North January 1, 1884. Their known children were James Ray (b. 10/10/84), Nellie & Norma North (b. 11/16/86), and George Wesley (b. 02/19/93).

He died in Belle Plaine on December 21, 1929.
