GRANTVILLE Alice L. Burroughs, 89, died at home in Grantville on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004. Alice was born in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 16, 1915, the youngest child of William Dorsey and Minnie Irene Cox Canter. She attended the D.C. schools and studied classical ballet at the King-Smith School for Girls and the Washington School of Ballet. Her love of dance began at an early age and continued throughout her life. She taught in Maryland and Kansas, specializing in ballet and interpretive dance for young children. She taught for the City of Topeka Parks and Recreation, YWCA and Joe Domme Dance Studios. After retiring she studied Middle Eastern Dance and with her husband, Dean, enjoyed many years of ballroom dancing. She was a cofounder of Dance Arts of Topeka, member of Y-Matron s Toastmistress and the Women of the Moose. She was a faithful volunteer at area nursing homes, involving residents in movement to music. Known for her unfailing optimism, she obtai ned scholarships for dance students in need and was always creative and persevering in her efforts to bring happiness to her family and others. Alice is survived by her husband of 39 years, Dean Burroughs; four daughters Dolores Sharp and Anita Sharp, both of Topeka, Madeline Tollefson and her husband, Allen, Lecompton, and Lori Sharp, Littleton, Colo; two granddaughters, Lisa Michaelis and her husband, Tye, Topeka, and Gina Vicedo and her husband Randy, Tampa, Fla; and two grandsons, Dr. Cary Murphy and his wife, Dawn, Clay Center, and Darren Dooley and his wife, Laura, Naperville, Ill. Other survivors include a brother, James Stanley Canter; a nephew, James Bradley Canter, Takoma Park, Md.; a niece, Loretta Asture, Simi, Calif.; seven great-grandchildren, Neely and Charly Michaels, Addison and Austin Vicedo, Erin Murphy, and Taylor and Ryan Dooley. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Thelma Timm, Viola Young, and Loretta Boland; and a grandson, Patrick Murphy. Funeral servic es will be at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 N.W. Independence at 2 p.m. Thursday with internment following at Grantville Cemetery. Mrs. Burroughs will lie in state after noon Thursday prior to the service.
