JOHN R. WHITNEY DIES WHILE ABROAD
Passing of an Esteemed Citizen and An Old Resident of San Jose
Mrs. Hattie Burns, daughter of J.R. Whitney of this city, arrived in San Jose today from Paris. She brought the news of the death of her father in that city on October 17th last.

Mr. and Mrs. Whitney, who were old residents of San Jose, and who lived at the corner of 10th and San Carlos streets for some 40 years, left for a tour of the world several years ago. About two years ago Mrs. Whitney died in Ireland and was buried at Londonderry. Mr. Whitney and his daughter had been living in Paris since Mrs. Whitney's death.

Mr. Whitney's death followed a long illness, and he was buried at his request, at the side of his wife at Londonderry, Ireland.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Whitney were members of the First Presbyterian Church in this city and had many friends here.

Mr. Whitney was a native of Michigan and was 77 years of age. He came to California in early days and was successfully engaged in business in San Francisco for many years. He retired from active business some 20 years ago.

Besides sons Ellard, Horatio, Edgar and daughter Mary, the Whitneys had a fifth child, Harriet "Hattie" Whitney Burns, born March 1, 1859 in San Francisco.
