John Sanford "Sandy" Bushman, age 89, passed away peacefully at home on April 3, 2024 in Leavenworth, Kansas. Sandy was born July 12, 1934 in Vernon, Kansas to Henry Oliver and Iva Lillian (Tannahill) Bushman. He attended a one room schoolhouse, at one point having his sister, Metta Jean, as his teacher. He graduated valedictorian from Yates Center (KS) High School in 1952. Graduating in 1956 from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, his honors included Stephenson Scholarship Hall recipient, Boeing Airplane Scholarship, Beta Gamma Sigma Fraternity and the Alpha Kappa Psi key, awarded to the outstanding Business School graduate. Upon graduation, Sandy worked for Arthur Anderson, passed the CPA exam and served in the US Army.
Sandy met his wife of 64 years, Alice at KU when he was a senior and she was a freshman. They were married June 6, 1959 at the First Christian Church in Leavenworth.
In August of 1959, Sandy opened an accounting practice in Leavenworth and was reviewing tax returns just three weeks before his passing. He has been a member of KSCPA, AICPA, Leavenworth Salvation Army Board, Commerce Bank (Leavenworth) Advisory Director, Leavenworth Kiwanis Club, Gideons International and the King Solomon Lodge #10 A.F. & A.M. He was named Leavenworth Junior Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Young Man in 1964. He served as President of the Leavenworth Jaycees, Leavenworth Kiwanis Club, Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce and Metro Chapter Kansas Society of CPAs. He also served Director of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Treasurer for the KSCPA Education Foundation. As a member of the First Christian Church of Leavenworth, he served as Elder, Trustee, Board Chairman and Treasurer.
In his free time, Sandy loved to travel with Alice and work in his garden. Many people have enjoyed his tomatoes and green peppers. For over 50 years, he enjoyed an annual fishing trip to Chase County, Kansas with Norman Dawson and other friends. He and Alice had season tickets to KU Football and Basketball and also enjoyed watching the Royals and Chiefs.
Sandy was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Juanita Chriestenson and Metta Jean Dayhoff.
Visitation will be 10:30 A.M, Saturday, April 6, 2024 at First Christian Church, 130 N 6th St, Leavenworth, KS. Funeral Service will begin at 11:30 A.M. Private burial will be held. The family would like to thank all of our friends for their prayers and support during this time. We also appreciate the care provided by the Saint Luke's Hospice Team.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Christian Church of Leavenworth or the Leavenworth Salvation Army.
