Obituary: "Gillenwater, Lewis William, died July 2, 1917, aged 76 years old, died at his home 12 miles northeast of Columbus, this morning at 1:40. Funeral services will be held from the Pleasant View church tomorrow afternoon at 2:30. Mr Gillenwater is survived by 4 sons" (Note: he was actually survived by 2 sons & 1 daughter) Columbus Daily Advocate, page 2:3, July 2, 1917.
Lewis is buried in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Weir, KS next to his brother James.
Lewis served in the Civil War.

CIVIL WAR SERVICE
Enlisted January 31,1862 at St. Marys, Ill in Company I, 57th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers & was mustered into service as Private on February 28, 1862 at Fort Henry, Tennessee. Wounded at Battle of Corinth, Mississippi, October 3, 1862. Mustered out with Company on July 7, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.

Lewis Gillenwaters married Mary Ella Worthington in Illinois 12/24/1869. It is assumed she died there. Their child was Edith May Gillenwaters. Edith married George Scott in Cherokee County, KS and both are buried in Pleasant View Cemetery, Weir, Cherokee, KS

He next married "Mattie" Martha Jemima Isabel Whelchel 12/15/1878 in McDonough County, IL.
Mattie is buried in Langdon Lane Cemetery, Pittsburg, Crawford County, KS
Their Children were: John Thomas Gillenwaters, 11/30/1879 Carthage, Schuyler , IL died 10/10/54 Pittsburg, Crawford, KS buried Pleasant View Cemetery, Weir, Cherokee, KS
