NEW BEDFORD - Alfred Fernandez, 90, of Dartmouth and formerly of New Bedford, passed away unexpectedly at St. Luke's Hospital on Friday, October 29, 2010.

He was the husband of the late Martha (Lepage) Fernandez; and son of the late Domingo and Francisca (Roja) Fernandez.

He was born in Boston and lived in Fairhaven prior to residing in New Bedford for 45 years and relocated to Dartmouth a year ago. He was a WW II Army Veteran under the leadership of General Patton and held the rank of Technician Fifth Grade. He served in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a highly decorated Veteran and was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal with 5 Battle Stars. Mr. Fernandez was a Storekeeper at Chamberlain until his retirement. In his leisure time he enjoyed watching sports and was an avid bowler at Wonder Bowl; but most of all he loved being with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his two daughters: Maria Gordon and her husband Robert of So. Dartmouth and Theresa Mitchell and her husband Sam of NY; one son: Barry Fernandez and his wife Crystal of VA; three step children: Retha Camaioni and Leonard and Richard Gruwell; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a brother Joseph Fernandez of Fairhaven; two sisters: Pearl Marshall of New Bedford and Rose Denuno of CA; several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Alan Fernandez and brother of the late Michael, Anthony and Aurelia Fernandez.

In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated.

Family will be receiving relatives and friends at Rock Funeral Home with his Funeral Mass the next day at St. Julie Church, Dartmouth, at a time to be announced.
