Mark Lambert Palmer son of Daniel Washington Palmer and Nancy Eveline Koen Palmer. Husband of Carrie Isobell Grimes Palmer. Parents of twelve children. I was not and am not a mean person but when a youngster played a lot of what I deem to be "dirty" tricks on him which he laughed and loved to tell folks about. But at the time I did it at such a young age; if he'd ever caught me I probably would not be here yet today! I was his "Number One Water Girl." Grandmother would make up a gallon jug of "ice water" and I would take to him where he was plowing in the fields. Well, one day and it seemed to be the hottest day too, he was plowing coming toward me at a distance I could see he was soaking wet and his shirt tail flapping behind him soaked. For this jug of water he would always give me a nickel. Today, he had no change in his pocket and told me that all he had was an old wooden nickel, but he'd give me the real one when he went to the house. Well, my comeback was "no money no water". He turned Old Bill, the mule to go back plowing another row and turned and started back, thinking that I would surely give him water this time. When he got up to me he said "sure could use a drink of that cool water". I said "no money no water".
I then took the jar lid off and poured it on the ground. Boy, I don't know why he got so mad! Of course at this point I had started to run toward the house screaming for grandmother. She met me at the back porch screen door wanting to know what I had done. Seeing he was getting close I made a mad dash for the barn and climbed up in the loft. I am told I stayed up there for four days and no one could talk me down. I was three years old at the time.
