Anna Mae Casteel was born September 16, 1908 at Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the daughter of Hiram Andrew and Lindy Francis Casteel. She lost her parents while she was still in grade school. She was raised by relatives in Oklahoma and Arkansas. My mom had said that her grandma had a very tough life. She married Truman Edward Gant on July 12, 1931 at Slick, Oklahoma. They made their home in Oklahoma until 1942, when they moved to Wichita, following the start of World War II. She had five children, three sons Donald, Ronald, and Richard. She also had two daughters Marian and Barbra. She moved to Eureka with her family in 1945, where she continued her life as a faithful wife and mother. She never learned to drive, but was still very active in clubs. She was also a very active member of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church. My mom said "even though grandma was only four foot eleven in her eyes she was larger than life." She said "she had more spunk in her little finger than many people have in their whole body." One of the saddest days was when her youngest son Richard died on August 6, 1991 from Leukemia. The most heart wrenching was when her beloved husband, Truman died on February 9, 1998 due to complications from a stroke that he had two years prior to his death. My mom said "she never left his side." Anna joined her husband Truman on September 13, 2005.
