He overlooked or ignored many titles that might have graced his monument: major in the War of 1812; town official; leader of unpopular minorities; founder of such institutions as Franklin College, the General Association of Baptist in Indiana, the Bethel Association; and even that appellation by which he was proud to be known, deacon of the Baptist church. Instead he epitomized his life on earth and his hope for the life to come in the simple words: "A Sinner saved by grace."

The book titled 'John M'Coy: His Life and Diaries" and yes it's spelled M'Coy, so not to be confused with the Hatfield & McCoy families. No relation!

As a note John was the brother of James, Rice and Isaac McCoy. All three were Baptist preachers. Isaac would be a missionary to the American Indians in Indiana, Michigan, Kansas and Oklahoma
