Visitation will begin Saturday at 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
Huey D. "Brother" Hammontree, Sr. of Springhill was born October 29, 1939 to Willie Edom and Lutishia Stone Hammontree and died Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from a massive heart attack and is now in the presence of Jesus. Huey and his wife, Evelyn were returning from Lynchburg, VA where they had graduated in "Bible" from Liberty University.
Huey served as a Boy Scout Master, as a member of Order of the Arrow (a special honor bestowed to Boy Scouts by their peers after outstanding service), Jaycee, volunteer firefighter, and peewee football coach. He had many proxy grandchildren who called him papaw! On more than one occasion, He brought a troubled young person to live in their home. He had a tender heart and loved people. He also loved his family and his wife's family. Huey was an avid Turkey and Deer Hunter and loved to fish. He loved sports and was very knowledgeable of the games. Most of all he loved serving the Lord. He was an active deacon at Calvary Baptist Church in Springhill. Huey sang in the church choir and conducted singing with the Calvary Choir at the Springhill and Taylor Nursing Homes. In November of 1999 Huey was on life support for 8 days, during that time he got "A Glimpse of Heaven" which he recorded on paper and loved to hand out as Bible tracts. He would get too emotional to tell about it verbally but he would always say, "Christians have got a wonderful place to go" and then hand them a copy of the experience. Huey was an organ donor and also frequently gave blood, as he was a Red Cross Guardian Angel.
Huey was always good at fixing things and so he worked as a mechanic first in the oil field industry and later owned his own gas/service station, Midway Texaco in Springhill, LA. Next he became an industrial maintenance supervisor at the Louisiana Ordinance Plant in Minden, LA.
Huey, Sr and his wife left Springhill in 1969 to pursue careers in Shreveport, LA. There he worked as a maintenance supervisor at Ford/Gould Battery and ultimately as a mechanic at Western Electric/AT & T where his wife also worked as a buyer's assistant. Huey & Evelyn were very active at Missionary Baptist Tabernacle which not only was home to the church but to a K-12 school as well as the Bible College. There Huey actually helped build the structure that housed the new church operated elementary school building. Both Huey and Evelyn directed Kindergarten Church for over 75 children. After retirement in 2006 Huey and Evelyn returned to Springhill. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of 45 years; one son, Huey, Jr and wife, Lynn; one daughter, Mary "Missy" and husband, Greg "Wolf" Whitham; one grandson, T. J. and fiancée, Mandy; three sisters, Bessie Charles and husband, Robert, Pauline "Sue" Holtzclaw and husband, Fred and Peggy Jean Lee; many nieces, nephews, extended family members and a host of friends, including all his hunting buddies.
Huey, one of seventeen children, was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Wallace, Hester, Marvin, Parey, Reynold, Perry, Franklin "Cooter", Calvin "Bo", John Albert; sisters, Rose Hammontree, Elaine Krouse, Aline Harvey, Louise Coleman; and a host of other family and friends.
