Susie was a member of the Palestine Church of God where the Preacher was the Reverend Rethie Jackson. Susie would sometimes sing a solo, and 'make the rafters ring'. She believed in Jesus as her Lord and Savior with all her heart. Grandma sold some of the excess chicken eggs from the animals she raised to augment their income. She then tithed her earnings. I remember, the few times I went to church with her, that she carried a handkerchief with pennies tied with a knot. The pennies were her offering. It reminded me of the Biblical story in Mark Chapter 12 about the 'Widow's Mite".
She was a gifted chef who could cook up some of the best tasting food in all of the South. Her 'tea cakes' were a favorite with her grandchildren.
