Horace "Junior" Doan, 87, of Benton Township, died peacefully on Sunday, April 24, 2022, with his family at his side at his home.

A service celebrating his life will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 29, at the Fairplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in Benton Township with the Rev. James Dunn of Yore Community Church officiating. Burial will follow in North Shore Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends and relatives from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Fairplain Chapel.

Memorials can be made to Caring Circle or Right at Home Caring Service.

The family wishes to thank all those who helped take care of Junior.

Junior was born on Aug. 19, 1934, in Hayti, Mo., to Horace Sr. and Eutha Doan.

He married his wife, Maudie Fischer, on Sept. 16, 1953, and together they celebrated more than 68 years of marriage.

Junior was employed as a maintenance man with Auto Specialties, now AUSCO, for 45 1/2 years before retiring.

He was a graduate of Benton Harbor High School. In his younger years, he was a pitcher for his softball team, playing many of the softball shop teams in the area. Junior was also an avid bowler, playing in numerous leagues in the area. He had the distinction of bowling two 300 perfect games in his bowling life.

Junior enjoyed hunting, working in his yard, and gardening. He was a hard-working individual who loved having his family around him, especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

His family includes his wife, Maudie; his children, Alice (Les) Rice of Sawyer and Larry (Brenda) Doan of Pipestone Township; his sister, Mae Wilson of Benton Harbor; his brother, Alva Doan of Benton Harbor; his 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Glenda, in 1954; his son, Steven, in 2019; three brothers and two sisters.
