Robert A. Jansson was the son of Arthur A. Jansson and Francelia Metcalf Jansson. He had three daughters, Bonnie, Carol and Barbara and two granddaughters Shelby and Alise. His first wife, and mother of his children, was Prudence McKissock Jansson. His second wife of 31 years was Judith Memmott Jansson. His younger brother Arthur Jansson Jr. predeceased him.

He was an artist, environmentalist, humorist, and a fine gentleman.
