William's mother, Martha Merriss, was the daughter of Joseph S. Merriss Jr. and his first wife Sarah Walkup. Joseph's family had moved from New York to Ohio around 1818-1819, and Sarah was from Pennsylvania, her heritage being English/Irish origins.
Martha, along with her birth family, moved to Kansas around 1867, where Martha married Alfred W. Baker and had a family of their own between 1873 and 1884. The second birth in this family were twins, Rose C. Baker and William C. Baker.
