John Alexander was born to Frank and Edna Jenkins Alexander in a sparsely populated region of northeast Texas. John's father died in 1929, leaving seven year-old John, his mother, older brother, and younger sister to eke out a living during tough Depression times.

He left school to farm the family's small plot in Titus County. In July 1941 at age 19, he hitched a ride to Dallas to enlist in the US Army, and was already a soldier by the time the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December of that year. He served honorably in the European theatre during World War II and was discharged in June 1945, having advanced to the rank of corporal.

In his later years, he lived in Kerr County, Texas.
