Francis Edward Eister, Loomis, Calif., died Jan. 14, 2008, with his family by his side.
He was born and raised in Shell Lake, WI. He is a direct descendent of the first settler of Shell Lake, Captain Leander "Dan" Thomas, who establish a trading post that later became the town's first school.
Francis served in the CCC and from 1943-46 he served in the U.S. Air Force. From 1946-49, he served with the Air Force National Guard. He was a civil service employee at Mather Air Force Base for over 20 years. His extensive model train collection was featured in the Nor-Cal Train Club of Sacramento's annual train magazine. He was a past member of the Ski Country Bottle Club and the Jim Beam Bottle Club.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca Thomas Eister; and grandmother Mary Shinaway Thomas, Shell Lake; his brothers, Eugene Eister and Captain Allen Eister, and his nephew Dale Diemer Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Elizabeth "Becky" Eister; daughter Janet Shull (Don) and children Shawn (Sheri), Scott, and Stephanie and granddaughters Baylee, Carlee and Alyx; daughter Cindy Rowell (Jim) and children Dawn Wade (Jim), Tom, Amy, Mike, and Sara; his son, Billy Eister (Jan) and sons Matthew and Mark (Christina); his sister, Emerald Diemer; nieces Cheryl (Ernie), Karen (Orest); and nephews Donald, Allen Eister (Gloria) and Jim Eister (Cindy).
Funeral services were held Jan. 19 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Rocklin, Calif. Interment was at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Sacramento, Calif. Reception to follow at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Indian Relief Charities.
