He was a Spencerville, IN resident and retailer (general store) from 1866 until his retirement in 1883 (age 65) to nearby St. Joe, IN. According to one version, he remained in Spencerville until all of the children had "left the nest" and then, in 1890, he and Caroline moved two miles north to St. Joe where they spent the rest of their married life together. After Samuel's death, Caroline spent much of her remaining 9 years living with and visiting with her children and their families, who by 1900 had all relocated outside the St. Joe area.
Per his biography he was born in Saint Albans, or Highgate, VT 24 JUN 1818 and died 14 APR 1899 Saint Joe, De Kalb IN.
