Samuel Newell OLDS migrated as a 20 year old bachelor, to Ft. Wayne IN to apprentice in hatmaking under widower brother-in-law Henry Sharp for several years. By 1844, he had returned to St. Albans, VT to marry, at age 26, to Caroline Robinson. Caroline was one of two children of Paul Robinson, Jr. and Betsy (Jennison) Robinson. Hatmaker in St. Albans, VT until mid-1855, then returned in 1865 to Ft. Wayne, IN (with family) to live
(and make hats) for the next 11 years except 1859-1861 while farming 9 miles NW of Ft. Wayne. In 1866, Samuel bought a general store in Spencerville, IN and moved his family there. He was a Spencerville, IN resident and retailer (general store) from 1866 until his retirement in 1883 (age 65) to nearby St. Joe, IN. According to one version, he remained in Spencerville until all of the children had "left the nest" and then, in 1890, he and Caroline moved two miles north to St. Joe where they spent the rest of their married life together. After Samuel's death, Caroline spent much of her remaining 9 years living with and visiting with her children and their families, who by 1900 had all relocated outside the St. Joe area.
Per his biography he was born in Saint Albans, or Highgate, VT 24 JUN 1818 and died 14 APR 1899 Saint Joe, De Kalb IN.
