Born at home in Chilton, the oldest child and only son of Barney Samples and Liddie Mae (Hufstedler) Samples.

Applied to marry Grace M. Graham on November 12, 1957 in Adams County, Ohio. They had five daughters and were divorced at the time of his death.

Died instantly as a result of a drunk-driving automobile crash (two cars, head-on collision).

Two passengers were in the car with James Samples:

Mrs. Mary Lee Kirkpatrick nee Blacketer, 21, of St. Louis, MO died of her injuries on August 22, 1970. Memorial # 194460619.

Walter DeLouis Hamrick, 52, of St. Louis, died instantly. Memorial # 228866997.

The other car contained six members of the Sadowski family. They were all killed instantly:
