Helen Jeannette Woolfenden Smith, 86, of Sykesville died Friday, May 9, 2008, at home. Born June 5, 1921, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Edmund and Estella Sleet Woolfenden. She was the wife of the late Kenneth Smith, whom she married in 1940. She graduated from Seton High School in 1939. She was an operator for C&P Telephone Co. during World War II. She had also been an administrative secretary at Mount Hebron High School for 10 years. She and her husband lived in Ellicott City for 50 years and moved to Fairhaven in Sykesville six years ago. She was a seamstress and enjoyed sewing for her family. She was actively involved with St. Paul's Church Mother's Club and was an active member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Ellicott City. She was an avid sports fan, especially of the Orioles. Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law Diane and Robert Bastress of Sykesville, Susan and Robert Curtis of Norris, Tenn., and Sally Morgan of Elkridge; grandchildren Elizabeth Ramirez, Robert Bastress II, James and Mark Bastress, James Curtis, Lee Miller and Jennifer Herrick; and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Estella O'Brien; and a twin brother, Edgar Woolfenden. A funeral liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Community, 915 Liberty Road, Eldersburg, with Monsignor Peter Bastress officiating. Interment will be in Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.
