Dr Dwight Killian Shellman died Saturday, August 28, 1999.


He was born February 20, 1908 the son of Killian and Anna Marie Johnson Shellman in Ford County. He attended the University of Illinois and graduated from the Northwestern University of Dental School in 1932. He is a veteran of World War II, serving as a dental officer in the United States Public Health Service where he rose to the rank of Lt Commander before establishing a dental practice in Springfield, Ohio in 1946.


Dr Shellman was a lifelong student and sometime essayist on matters relating to environmental stewardship and environmentally sustainable lifestyles. He was a member of the congregation of Christ Episcopal Church of Springfield, Ohio.


He was also an accomplished musician and weaver of fabrics. His local civic activities included the teaching of weaving at the Springfield Elderly program and Self Help for the Hard of Hearing, the Springfield Kiwanis Club, the Springfield Polka Band as well as regimental marksmanship and band activities of the reactivated Civil War units known as the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry Regiment, the 44th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment and band.


His professional memberships included the American Dental Association, the Ohio State Dental Society and the Mad River Dental Society. He was president of the Mad River Dental Society in 1951-1952.


He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Grace Darling Baylor Shellman and one son, David John Shellman. He is survived by one son, Dwight K Shellman Jr of Aspen, Colorado; two daughters and their spouses, Barbara and David Hiles of Scottsdale, Arizona and Gail and Tom Sines of Whitehall, Ohio; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Robbins Shellman of Springfield, Ohio; one sister Lucille Coen of Kerrville, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.


Funeral arrangements were held Sept 1 at 11am at the Littleton and Rue Funeral Home in Springfield, Ohio. Interment was at Rose Hill Burial Park.
