Daniel Norton Hartley, 72, an honored Boy Scout leader, died Dec. 6 at Humana HospitalAlaska. A funeral service was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Eddy of St. Mary's Episcopal Church officiating. A visitation was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Hartley was born June 6, 1916, in Kansas City, Mo. Looking for work, he moved to Alaska in 1941. Ten days after Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Richardson and served there until his discharge in 1946. He worked for the Alaska Railroad and later for the power plant at Elmendorf Air Force Base. From 1963 to his retirement in 1977, he worked for Smyth Moving Company and was a member of the Teamsters Union. In his younger days, he was active in the Anchorage Ski Club and served as its president when the original Arctic Valley Ski Lodge was built. He was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America, which he first became involved in when he was 12 years old. He received the Eagle Scout Award in 1932 from Dan Beard, one of the three founders of the Boy Scouts. In 1964, the Western Alaska Council presented him with the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor a local council can bestow on one of its volunteers. He was a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow and a wood badge instructor with three beads. Mr. Hartley had held every position in the local Boy Scout Council, and in 1985 he traveled with the scouts to New Zealand, where they bicycled across the island. He returned for a second visit in 1987.

He leaves his sons, John, of Anchorage, and Jimmie, of Kodiak; his daughter, Roberta Williams, of Vancouver, Wash.; and his sister, Roberta Keve, of Overland Park, Kan.; and two grandchildren. Burial was in Angelus Memorial Park. Memorials may be sent to the Dan Hartley Camp Gorsuch Memorial Fund, in care of the Western Alaska Council of the Boy Scouts of America, 3117 Patterson Rd., Anchorage 99504.
