James W. Dunn II died in Oregon in 1904. He was a Deputy Sheriff in Benton County, Oregon, who died in the line of duty at age 43. He had previously served as Chief of Police in Corvallis, Oregon. After retiring from Chief of Police, several years later he was sworn in as a Deputy for Benton County. Deputy Dunn and several other deputies were attempting to arrest a disorderly drunk man at a local Saloon. During the struggle, the man shot Deputy Dunn with a handgun. The Sheriff shot and killed the suspect. Deputy Dunn died two days later of his wounds. At the time of his death, he was a widower with three children.
