Gail was born on a farm near Du Quoin, IL, the son of Hosea C Kennedy and Mary A (Edie) Kennedy. He was the youngest of four children. Growing up, he was mainly raised by his father and older sister as his mother died at a young age. His older brother Truman had found work during harvest, on the John Streich farm near Maroa, IL. Gail began working for John Streich during the harvest seasons also.
John Streich had a daughter; Edith Bernice Streich. Gail married Edith on November 30, 1939, in Rockville, IN. In 1940, they moved to a farm, of 200 acres, near Hallsville, DeWitt County, IL. This is where they would begin farming and raising a family together. They raised two sons: Lynn R and James M Kennedy.
Gail retired from farming in 1980, but they continued to live on the family farm. Gail enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with family and friends. He and Edith enjoyed square dancing and country music.
