Mary M. McAfee was born January 18, 1926 in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Sam (Sahag) and Margaret DerNersessian Derderian. She graduated from Davenport High School in 1944 and worked for 10 years as an executive secretary. She married Wendel McAfee on January 27, 1953 in Davenport, Iowa. Mary enjoyed reading, music, cooking, and sewing. Mary and Wendel enjoyed traveling overseas to such places as Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, the British Isles, Greece, and Turkey. Her father escaped from Turkey arriving in the United States in 1910, proudly enlisted and served overseas in the U.S. Army during World War I. Meanwhile he learned his parents, four brothers, wife, child, and extended family members were victims of the first genocide of the 20th century. Mary's mother survived the massacre, however was witness to the death of her parents, six of her brothers and sisters and extended family. April 24 is Armenian Remembrance Day in memory of the million and one half Armenians who were victims of genocide.
