James Henry Graves was the son of Greenville Harrison (1815-1884) and Mary Cook Graves (1810-1862). He was born in Racine County, Wisconsin. Before he was 4, James' father moved the family to Vermilion County, IL where he (Greenville) had been raised from about 12 years old (around 1827). It was in Vermilion County that James Henry Graves married his wife, Nancy Lanham, on 4 Sep 1880.

James' siblings were Margaret Jane Graves #53307052; Bluford S. Graves #17494145; Cidda Ann Graves (Dougherty); Samantha Graves #46509389; Lucinda #47345272; Joseph Graves #2981532; Lemuel Taylor Graves #47345234; and Susan Elizabeth Graves (Leaverton).

James' half-siblings were Flora Bell Graves; Julia Graves (Clark) and Charley Greenville Graves.

Obituary of Mr. Graves
He Enlisted in the Army at the Age of 18 - Came from Illinois

James H. Graves was born in Wisconsin, March 1, 1844, and died at his home in Montgomery County, Kan. Jan 15, 1907. His age was 63 years, 10 months and 14 days. At an early age he removed with his parents to Vermilion County, Ill. At the age of 18 he enlisted in company C, Twelfth Infantry and served until the close of the war.

In 1869 he came to Montgomery County, Kan, and pre-empted the farm where he had since lived. On September 4, 1878, he was united in marriage to Nancy Lanham, of Vermilion County, Ill. To this union were born two children, who still survive him. On July 25, 1894, Mrs. Graves was called to her home above. In 1901 he was united in marriage to Mary Duckworth, who is left to mourn his loss.

The funeral services were held from the Christian church in Coffeyville. The writer condusted the services, assisted by Rev. Purlee. R.N.H. McAdams, pastor M.P. church.
