Yancey Dean enlisted at Edgefield, South Carolina in Gary's Watson Guards which became Co. B of Hampton's Legion, where he was eventually promoted to 4th Sergeant. The Watson Guards were mustered into Confederate service on June 12, 1861. Dean was severely wounded in the arm and thigh at the Battle of Seven Pines, on June 1, 1862 and his arm was amputated. After he was discharged, he entered the South Carolina Military Academy (The Arsenal Academy) and was detailed to the Quartermaster Dept., after the evacuation of Columbia. (Bio by: Jay Lance)

Capt. Dean Was One of Two Last Confederate Survivors

Eufaula, Ala. - Capt. Leonard Yancey Dean, Confederate veteran, died in Eufaula on Thursday of a heart attack. He was 89 years old. Capt. Dean suffered the loss of an arm in the Battle of Seven Pines in the War Between the states.
For 50 years, he was active in the insurance business and was active until a month ago. Survivors: Four daughters - Mrs. F. P. Bakewell of Macon, Georgia; Mrs. J. W. Moody of Buffalo, New York; Mrs. T. L. Moore and Mrs. J. B. Rees of Eufaula; One son - L. Y. Dean, Jr., of Eufaula.
