Mrs. J. W. Henderson Dead.
The Wife of Our Ex-Senator John W. Henderson Succombs to a Fatal Malady and After Patient Suffering Passes Peacefully Away.
__The death of Mrs. Elizabeth Henderson, wife of venerable ex-Senator J. W. Henderson of this city, which occurred last evening at 6 o'clock, was not unexpected by her friends and yet the loss is none the less keenly felt. Through years of suffering she had so endeared herself to her kin that the senator's home will be very lonely, now that the spirit of the woman that made it so bright and pleasant has taken its flight. Mrs. Henderson was born at Richmond, Va., Aug. 21, 1820, and was therefore nearly the alotted three score years and ten. She was twice married. Two children, Mrs. J. H. Smith of this city, and Samuel G. Ward of Olympia, Washington, were the product of the first marriage, and five children, Kate, who resides at home, John B., Edward, deceased, George W., and Mrs. Ella Williams, were born to her from her second marriage with ex-Senator Henderson. Mr. and Mrs. Henderson were married in 1851 at Hennepin, Ill., and moved to Iowa in 1858, locating at Iowa City and removing here in 1865 where they have lived for nearly a quarter of a century.
__Living so long in this community and possessing so many graces of mind and heart, it is not surprising that she was beloved by a large circle of friends. All the years spent in this city have been laden with rich fruitage of good deeds and kind acts that cannot be forgotten. She was a devoted member of Grace church and the members of that church know full well how active was her work among them. She was always ready to visit and aid the sick and needy as long as her health permitted and when disease had laid its hand upon her and she was no longer able for such active work, her purse was open none the less and she still took an active part in the meetings of the various societies. Until within the past year the Henderson home has been the scene of many church and social gatherings, and her warm cordiality and generous hospitality was never witheld. For the past decade she has been a great sufferer. A derangement of the stomach culminating in a cancerous growth has all those years been giving her extreme pain. But in all that time she has born the affliction with a most marked degree of fortitude and patience. A cottage was built at Spirit Lake and for five summers past she has been there with her husband, where a partial relief was found. In March of this year she accompanied her son John B. to the inauguration of President Harrison, and visited the family of Hon. Thomas Henderson, congressman from Illinois, brother of our esteemed townsman, and also relatives in New York, making a trip of about four weeks. Since her return she has been failing gradually, and, although everything that medical skill could do was at command, and despite loves best gifts, she continued to grow weaker until death relieved her of her suffering. She was a tender mother and a devoted wife, a christian woman of generous impulses and noble qualities of character, a eulogy greater than which none need covet, and her death was a sinking into a peaceful, unbroken and painless slumber, surrounded by her children and her sisters, Mrs. Lucy Butler of Wyoming, Ill., and Mrs. General Henderson of Princeton, Ill. She thus passed away, a blessed memory to all who knew her.
__The funeral will occur at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the residence, Rev. Dr. Green, officiating.
