Born in Woodview, Morrow Co. Ohio, the son of Samuel and Sarah Singrey Patterson.
He married Helen Bradley Patterson on Jan. 23, 1861 in Morrison, Whiteside Co. Illinois.
Served in Company C, 8th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Calvary - Sept. 1861 until July 1865.

"Joshua R. Patterson, was born in Woodview, Morrow Co. Ohio, January 10, 1833. Died October 19, 1899. Aged 66 years, 7 months and 27 days.
His father moved with his family to Missouri when Joshua was six years old, when he was 17 years of age. His father died and he returned to Ohio and remained there 9 years. He then moved to Illinois. On January 23, 1861 , he was married to Helen J. Bradley at Morrison, Whiteside Co. Illinois. On the 10th of Sept. 1861, he enlisted in Company C 8th Illinois Calvary Regiment. In the autumn of 1864 he re-enlisted as a veteran in the same Company and regiment in which he served until the close of the war, and was discharged from the service at Camp Saint Charles, Caine Co. Illinois, having served nearly four years, being discharged in July 1865.
In August 1865 he moved with his wife to Savannah, Missouri and remained there three years. Then he moved to Irving, Marshall Co. Kansas in 1868. In 1872 he moved to Phillips Co. near Kirwin on Bow Creek, where he resided 8 years. He then spent one season in Rooks Co. but moved finally to Kirwin where he resided until his death. Nine children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Patterson, 4 have preceeded him to the other world, 5 children with the wife of his youth are left to mourn his death.
He united with the M.E. church in 1891 under the ministry of Rev. Markham, and remained a consistant member of the same until Thursday evening at 5 o'clock and 40 minutes when the Great head of the church transfered his name from the church millitent to the church triumphant in eternity.
The funeral services were conducted at the residence by Rev. Glick Oct. 21, 1899. Text Zech.1:4, "One generation passeth away and another cometh."
Subject the transitory and the permanent. Interment took place in the Kirwin Cemetery."
