David Horsburgh 81, Dies August 14
David Horsburgh, 81, purchaser of part of the original Crabtree donation land claim, died at his farm home three miles south of Scio Thursday evening, August 14, after an illness for the part several years. He had lived in the Scio area for over 50 years, coming here from Humboldt County, California shortly before the turn of the century.
Mr. Horsburgh was born in Holstein, Ontario, Canada Christmas Day 1870. He left Canada with an uncle when he was 13, going from there to California. He purchased part of the original Crabtree claim, at what is now known as the Horsburgh covered Bridge, near Scio, and had farmed that land continuously since. In January 1900, Mr. Horsburgh married Clara B. Crabtree at the farm home.
Surviving besides his widow are four daughter, Mrs. Fred Darby and Mrs. H. F. Rosecrans, Scio; and Lottie and Gladys Horsburgh, who live at the family home. A son, James William and one daughter died in infancy. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Mima McFadyen, Elm Creek, Manitoba; Mrs. Ethel Love, Mountain Forest, Ontario, Canada; and three brothers, William of Mountain Forest; Walter, Fordwick, Ontario and Norburn of Holstein Ontario, Canada.
Mr. Horsburgh was a member of the Presbyterian Church and of the Modern Woodman of America.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2 p.m. at Huston Funeral Home in Lebanon with Rev. Harvey J. Schmidt, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Lebanon officiating. Mrs. Ed Drapela and Leon Drapela were vocalists at the services, with Arch Ray, Joe Menhart, Laurence Poindexter, James Freeman, Ray Jackson and Roy Locke as pallbearers. Vault interment was in the Franklin Butte cemetery.

David Horsburgh married Clara Belle Crabtree on 24 Jan 1900, at the home of the Brides Parents, Mr. & Mrs. James P. Crabtree, three miles south of Scio. Riley Shelton, Scio Justice of the Peace, tied the nuptial knot.
David Horsburgh farmed on the old James Crabtree property, a part of which he purchased. The land was a part of the original John Jay Crabtree claim. He ran the sawmill left there by Tinker Jim.
